How to play hangman on paper — without the gallows

Give each pupil (or pair) a sheet. The person who knows the word calls out whether each guessed letter is in it: if it is, write it in every box where it belongs; if not, cross off a mango and the letter in the A–Z strip. Guess the word before the last mango goes and you win. Spaces and hyphens are already printed, so everyone can see how many words there are.

Ideas for the classroom

• Spelling test warm-up — print this week's words, four to a page, and play in pairs before the test.
• Topic vocabulary — science, history or geography words for a starter or an end-of-lesson check.
• Wet play and cover lessons — a stack of sheets needs no screens and no set-up.
• More guesses for younger pupils — raise the guesses to 10 for Key Stage 1; lower them for a challenge.
