Easy cities for hangman

Short, globally recognisable city names with straightforward spellings. These work well for mixed-age groups or as a warm-up before moving to longer names.

Medium cities for hangman

Longer city names that most people know but may trip over when spelling letter by letter — particularly those that arrived in English from Japanese, Arabic or Spanish.

Hard cities for hangman — the trickiest spellings

Long names, repeated syllables and transliterations from scripts with no direct Latin equivalent make these the hardest cities to guess in hangman. Most people have heard of them; almost nobody has written them out in full.

What makes city names hard to guess in hangman?

Repeated letters from other languages. Guadalajara spreads four As across five syllables, and Johannesburg hides a double N mid-word. They look almost symmetrical, which confuses players who try to reconstruct them from a few revealed letters.

Chinese transliteration. Guangzhou and Shenzhen both use the ZH pairing, which English text almost never produces — sound-based guessers get nothing to work with.

Two Qs. Albuquerque has two, each followed by UE — a pattern no other famous city shares, and one that punishes players who assume a word holds at most one Q.

Long names with quiet middles. Wolverhampton, Vladivostok and Thessaloniki are all long enough that even knowing the city well, players can misplace a letter when forced to guess one at a time. The middle sections — where the word is partly revealed but not fully — are where errors creep in.

Tips for guessing city names

Start with A and then E. Between them, A and E cover a remarkable number of tiles in city names at every level. Barcelona, Casablanca, Guadalajara — the A alone appears multiple times in each.

Try N and S early on long words. Both appear very frequently across global city names. Johannesburg has two Ns and an S; Novosibirsk has both too.

Watch for doubled letters. Johannesburg doubles its N and Thessaloniki its S. If a word looks shorter than you expect, check whether a doubling is accounting for the extra length.

Think second cities, not capitals. None of these are national capitals — if you're stuck on a long blank, run through famous ports, industrial giants and tourist icons instead: Osaka rather than Tokyo, Marseille rather than Paris.

What is the hardest city name to guess in hangman?
Wolverhampton by length, Kaohsiung by strangeness — the AOHS run defeats sound-based guessing entirely. Albuquerque, with its two Qs, is strong competition.

Why are there no capital cities in this list?
