Hard cities for hangman โ€” the trickiest spellings

Long names, repeated syllables and transliterations from scripts with no direct Latin equivalent make these the hardest cities to guess in hangman. Several of these are capitals that most people have heard of but have never needed to write out in full.

Reykjavik Ulaanbaatar Vladivostok Ouagadougou Antananarivo Kathmandu Montevideo Guadalajara Thessaloniki Tallinn Windhoek Tashkent Islamabad Johannesburg Wellington Novosibirsk Kuala Lumpur Addis Ababa Bujumbura Yamoussoukro Ndjamena Brazzaville Dushanbe

What makes city names hard to guess in hangman?

Repeated syllables from non-Latin languages. Ouagadougou (capital of Burkina Faso) and Antananarivo (capital of Madagascar) both contain repeated syllable patterns that come from local languages. They look almost symmetrical, which confuses players who try to reconstruct them from a few revealed letters.

Icelandic and Scandinavian consonant clusters. Reykjavik begins with a REYKJ run โ€” four letters including a Y and a J โ€” before settling into recognisable territory. Players who know the city name often still misspell the opening cluster.

Transliteration inconsistency. Ulaanbaatar has two A's in a row (ULAAN) that reflect Mongolian pronunciation but look odd to English eyes. Tallinn has a double-N that most people forget. These reflect the source language, not English phonics.

Long compound names. Johannesburg, Vladivostok and Thessaloniki are all long enough that even knowing the city well, players can misplace a letter when forced to guess one at a time. The middle sections โ€” where the word is partly revealed but not fully โ€” are where errors creep in.

Tips for guessing city names

Start with A and then E. Between them, A and E cover a remarkable number of tiles in city names at every level. Barcelona, Nairobi, Casablanca, Antananarivo โ€” the A alone appears multiple times in each.

Try N and S early on long words. Both appear very frequently across global city names. Johannesburg has two N's and an S; Singapore has both.

Watch for doubled letters. Tallinn ends in a double-N; Amsterdam has a double-A; Brazzaville has a double-Z and a double-L. If a word looks shorter than you expect, check whether the doubling is accounting for the extra length.

Think about capital cities first. On the hard tier especially, most of these are national capitals โ€” narrowing the geography helps with the spelling. Islamabad, Wellington and Montevideo are all capitals, which limits the options once you know the region.

Questions

What is the hardest city name to guess in hangman?
Ouagadougou is perhaps the most notorious: 11 letters, five O's, the unusual OUAG opening, and a repeated DOUGOU ending that takes players by surprise. Antananarivo (12 letters with repeated ANA patterns) and Ulaanbaatar (with its double-A) are strong competition.

Should I use capital cities or just any cities?
Capitals are reliable because most players have at least heard of them, making the reveal feel fair. But the easy tier also works well with large non-capital cities like Sydney, Miami or Lagos that everyone knows even if they're not the capital of their country.

Can I use these words in my own hangman game?
