How to guess transport words

Compound words are common on Medium. Several vehicles are named for what they combine or where they travel — spotting a familiar chunk inside a longer word often unlocks the rest.

Borrowed words don't follow English patterns. A number of the hardest transport words come largely unchanged from other languages, so unusual letter combinations are the norm rather than the exception.

-craft and -cycle are recurring endings. A handful of vehicles share these endings — once you spot the pattern, you can test it on your next guess with more confidence.

Tricky transport spellings to watch

• vehicle — the general word for anything that carries people or goods. The silent H after "ve-" is the classic trap.
• pedestrian — a person travelling on foot rather than by vehicle, and the word every driver needs to spell correctly. The -estrian ending catches most people out.
• navigation — finding the way from one place to another. The -igation ending is easy to mishear and misspell.
• commute — a regular journey to and from work or school. One M, double... actually just one of each — the easy mistake is doubling the M.
• logistics — the planning and movement involved in transporting goods. The -istics ending is the usual sticking point.
• itinerary — a planned route or journey schedule. Famously one of the most commonly misspelled words in English; it's -erary, not -orary.

• Taxi is short for "taximeter cab" — the meter device that automatically calculated the fare, patented in the 1890s.
• Zeppelin is named after Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the German inventor who pioneered the rigid airship design in the early 20th century.
• Gondola is a Venetian word, possibly tracing back to the Greek kondy, a type of drinking vessel, describing the boat's distinctive curved shape.
• Rickshaw comes from the Japanese jinrikisha, literally "human-powered vehicle" — combining jin (human), riki (power) and sha (vehicle).
• Catamaran comes from the Tamil kattumaram, meaning "tied wood" — an accurate description of the lashed-together logs the earliest versions were built from.
