• Barber derives from the Latin barba, "beard." Medieval barbers also performed minor surgery and dentistry — the red-and-white striped pole still seen outside barbershops is said to represent blood and bandages.
• Librarian traces to the Latin liber, "book," the same root that gives us "library" and "libretto."
• Journalist comes from the French jour, "day" — a journalist was originally simply someone who wrote for a daily publication, a "journal."
• Architect comes from the Greek arkhitekton, literally "chief builder" — combining arkhi- ("chief") and tekton ("builder" or "craftsman").
