• occultation — when one celestial body passes in front of another, blocking it from view. Double C, and nothing to do with the everyday meaning of "occult."
• syzygy — when three celestial bodies line up, as in an eclipse. Famous among word-game players as one of the few English words with no standard vowels at all.

The stories behind the words

• Galaxy comes from the Greek galaxias, meaning "milky" — a direct reference to the Milky Way's pale band across the night sky.
• Astronaut combines the Greek for "star" and "sailor" — literally, a star-sailor. The Russian equivalent, cosmonaut, swaps in "universe" instead of "star."
• Jupiter is named for the king of the Roman gods, fittingly the largest planet in the solar system.
• Supernova combines the Latin for "new," since ancient astronomers mistook the sudden brightening of a dying star for a genuinely new star appearing.
• Pluto, no longer classed as a full planet, was named in 1930 by an 11-year-old English girl, Venetia Burney, after the Roman god of the underworld.
