Break long names into chunks. Dinosaur names are usually built from several Greek or Latin word-parts stuck together — try to recognise one chunk at a time rather than the word as a whole.

T and R turn up early and often. The common Greek and Latin chunks dinosaur names are built from lean heavily on these two letters — they carry an unusually large share of this category's vocabulary.

• theropod — the two-legged, mostly meat-eating group that includes T. rex. One R, not two, and it's -pod, not -pood.
• sauropod — the long-necked giants like Brachiosaurus. Easily confused with "theropod" above, despite being an entirely different body type.
• coprolite — the scientific word for fossilised dinosaur dung, and a genuine source of information for palaeontologists. Always gets a laugh in the classroom.
• ichthyosaur — a prehistoric marine reptile, not technically a dinosaur at all. The silent-ish "ichthy-" opening (Greek for "fish") catches almost everyone.

The stories behind the words

• Dinosaur itself was coined in 1842 by British scientist Richard Owen, combining the Greek deinos ("terrible") and sauros ("lizard").
• Tyrannosaurus rex means "tyrant lizard king" — Henry Fairfield Osborn named it in 1905, and it remains one of the only dinosaur names most non-experts know in full.
• Brontosaurus was declared invalid for over a century, dismissed as a duplicate of Apatosaurus — until a 2015 study restored it as its own genus after all.
• Velociraptor means "swift seizer," and the real animal was roughly turkey-sized — nothing like the human-height raptors of popular films.
• Triceratops means "three-horned face," a name so literal it doubles as a description.
