The stories behind the words

• Robin was originally simply called "redbreast" — "Robin" began as a nickname (much like "Robin Goodfellow" in folklore) that eventually replaced the bird's original name entirely.
• Flamingo comes from the Spanish or Portuguese flamengo, related to "flame," a direct nod to the bird's vivid pink-orange colour.
• Penguin was first used for the now-extinct great auk, a very different Northern Hemisphere bird — the name later transferred to the unrelated southern-hemisphere birds we know today.
• Albatross traces through Arabic, Portuguese and Spanish, altered along the way by association with the Latin albus, meaning "white."
• Kingfisher is a straightforwardly literal name — a small, brilliantly coloured bird that dives to catch fish — and was once genuinely believed to be a kind of royal or superior fisher.
