FROST recurs too. It appears alone, in frostbite and in hoarfrost — a five-letter run worth testing on longer Hard words.

-ing endings on Medium. Shivering and freezing follow the pattern — if a Medium word ends in three blanks, try I-N-G.

Tricky winter spellings to watch

• wintry — no E — "wintery" feels right and isn't the standard spelling.
• toboggan — one B, two Gs — nearly everyone doubles the wrong letter.
• avalanche — the French -ANCHE ending doesn't follow English sound rules.
• hoarfrost — the feathery white frost on cold mornings — HOAR is an Old English word almost nobody has written down before.
• solstice — the year's shortest day — the -STICE ending is rare in English.
• crampons — the spiked grips strapped onto boots on ice — a French borrowing few players have ever written down.

The stories behind the words

• Solstice comes from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still) — the day the sun's path stops sinking and turns back.
• Toboggan was borrowed from Algonquian languages of eastern Canada, via French-Canadian tabagane.
• Hibernate traces to Latin hibernare, "to spend the winter" — Roman armies had hiberna, winter quarters.
• Avalanche arrived from Alpine French dialect — one of several mountain words English simply took whole.
• Blizzard is an American word of uncertain origin that first meant a volley of blows before it meant a snowstorm.
