State names for every level

US States Hangman has three difficulty levels, so it works for younger children and confident geographers alike:

• Easy — short, well-known states, including a few two-word names like New York and New Jersey.
• Medium — longer state names, plus the trickier two-word states like the Dakotas and New Mexico.
• Hard — the longest state names in the country, including New Hampshire and both Carolinas.

How to guess US state words

Two-word states show their shape from the start. Spaces are visible immediately, so you can see how many words a state name has and how long each one is — use that shape to guess common short words like "new," "north" and "south" early.

"New" is doing a lot of work. Several states share this same opening word — once you've guessed it on one, you can test it immediately on any other two-word state.

North and South come in pairs. Two pairs of states share an identical second word — spotting the pattern on one can help you guess its twin.

A and I carry real weight. State names are unusually vowel-heavy — these two letters in particular turn up across a huge share of the list.

Tricky US state spellings to watch

• geographical — relating to geography and physical features. The -ographical ending is the usual trap.
• territorial — relating to a defined area of land. Single R at the start, the -orial ending catches most people out.
• boundary — the line marking where one state ends and another begins. Single N, and it's -ary at the end, not -ery.
• population — the number of people living in a state. The -ulation ending is the sticking point.
• jurisdiction — the official authority a state government holds over its area. Easy to lose a syllable in the middle.
• sovereignty — the authority of a state or nation to govern itself. Famously one of the trickiest words in American civics; it's -eignty, not -eignity.

The stories behind the words

• Texas comes from a Caddo word, táysha, meaning "friends" or "allies" — used by early Spanish explorers to describe the Caddo people themselves before it became the region's name.
• Kansas is named after the Kansa people, also known as the Kaw, whose name is thought to mean "people of the south wind."
• Delaware is named after Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an early colonial governor of Virginia — despite the fact he likely never actually set foot in the state that bears his name.
• Idaho has a famously murky origin: despite persistent claims that it means "gem of the mountains" in an Indigenous language, most historians now believe the name was simply invented by a lobbyist in the 1860s.
• Alaska comes from an Aleut word, roughly meaning "the mainland" or "object toward which the sea's action is directed" — a description of the peninsula from the water.
