What makes idioms hard to guess in hangman?

They're figurative, not literal. Idioms mean something entirely different from what the words say — that's the whole point — so you can't reason your way to the answer from meaning alone, only from letters.

Length works both for and against you. A longer phrase means more letters to work with, but also more common connecting words (a, the, of, in) competing for your guesses alongside the "interesting" vocabulary.

Word shape is a genuine clue. Because spaces are visible from the start, the number and length of words in a phrase narrows things down fast — once two or three words are revealed, your brain often finishes the sentence before your eyes do.

Some are simply obscure. Phrases like gone pear shaped or a storm in a teacup are common in British English but may be unfamiliar to newer English speakers, regardless of how many letters are revealed.

Tips for guessing idioms

Guess common short words first. "A," "the," "of," and "in" appear constantly in idioms — testing for these early can reveal a lot of the phrase's shape at once.

E, T and A go a long way. Ordinary connecting words dominate idioms more than in single-word categories, so the most common English letters pay off faster here.

Read the phrase as it fills in. Once two or three words are visible, try to complete the sentence in your head — idioms are formulaic, and that repetition is exactly what makes them idioms.

Apostrophes are already revealed. Where a phrase includes a possessive word, the apostrophe shows automatically — you'll never need to guess it.

Don't overthink the meaning. You don't need to know what an idiom means to guess its letters — treat it as a spelling puzzle first, and let recognition come afterwards.
