Clubs for every level
Names are written in full, without the "FC", so it's Manchester United rather than Man Utd. There are three difficulty levels:
- Easy - the famous names: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton, Celtic, Rangers and both Manchester clubs.
- Medium - well-known clubs with longer or trickier names: Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Brighton and Hove Albion, Middlesbrough, Hibernian and Aberdeen.
- Hard - famous old names from further down the leagues and across Scotland: Accrington Stanley, Hamilton Academical, Stenhousemuir and the longest of all, Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
How to guess football club names
Count the words. Thirty-nine of the sixty answers are two words or more, and the blanks show you how long each word is. Six clubs end in United and six in City, so a last word of six letters is often UNITED and a last word of four letters is often CITY.
E first, then T, N and R. E is the most common letter in the list by a long way, followed by T, N, R and A.
Think of the town. Most clubs are named after their town or city, so once a few letters are in, ask yourself which football town fits - then check the ending: Town, City, United, Rovers, Wanderers or Athletic.
Tricky club spellings to watch
- Middlesbrough - it's -brough, not -borough. Easy to add an O that isn't there.
- Sheffield Wednesday - the D in Wednesday is silent, but it still needs guessing.
- Tottenham Hotspur - double T in the middle of Tottenham, even though you hardly hear the middle when it's said.
- Wolverhampton Wanderers - twenty-two letters, with an H hiding in the middle of Wolverhampton.
- Stenhousemuir - a Scottish club whose name is easy to say but hard to spell: S-T-E-N-H-O-U-S-E-M-U-I-R.
- Inverness Caledonian Thistle - at twenty-six letters, the longest answer in the category.
The stories behind the names
- Sheffield Wednesday grew out of the Wednesday Cricket Club, so named because the founding members had a half-day off work on Wednesdays.
- Arsenal was founded in 1886 as Dial Square by munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich.
- Crystal Palace began as a professional club in 1905 at the Crystal Palace exhibition building, and played its first home games in the grounds.
- Heart of Midlothian, Edinburgh's oldest football club, was formed in 1874 with a name influenced by Walter Scott's novel The Heart of Midlothian.
- Hamilton Academical was established in 1874 from the school football team at Hamilton Academy - hence "Academical".
- Inverness Caledonian Thistle was formed in 1994 when two Inverness clubs, Caledonian and Inverness Thistle, merged.
